This is a topic that many people ask about, so here is a list of free to use windows programs that can replace your other more expensive programs.
ALL THESE PROGRAMS ARE FREE
avast! Antivirus – I have been using avast for 2 years now, and it works BETTER than the antivirus programs I have used in the past. It doesn’t squander resources that Norton does, and it actively scans network traffic and emails.
OpenOffice – Open office is a project that is now supported by Sun Microsystems. The OpenOffice project is a collection that can replace the Microsoft Office suite. All OpenOffice programs that have Microsoft counterparts allow you to save in Microsoft format so that they can be opened in OpenOffice AND Microsoft Office.
AdAware – AdAware is a program that scans your computer for spyware and removes everything it finds. It works very well and I have personally used it for many years. Zip / Compression Tools: Winace XAcePlus – XAcePlus can zip / package ACE, ARJ, CAB, LHA, LZH, JAR, RAR, ZIP and SFX files.
Image Editing Tools:
GIMP – I’ve been using GIMP for my photo editing for quite some time … It has a learning curve like Photoshop and it doesn’t have all the features that Photoshop does, but it comes pretty close and considering its free there really is no question for most people.
LogMeIn – I use logmein every day for work. LogMeIn is a fully automatically configured external desktop application (requires no router configuration, no need to open and port), which allows you to control any computer the software is installed on from another computer that has internet explorer (the computer you create connect to is the only computer that needs the logmein software running on it). This is probably the best program listed in this entire post!
Hamachi – This software is made by the same company as LogMeIn. It is an auto-configured VPN application that allows you to set up a network and then allow all computers that install the application to connect to it (with various security settings). All computers connected to the network (although in different countries) will be able to access the folders on the other computers on the network as if they were on the same LAN.
MBM – This software monitors every aspect of your computer, including hard drive temperature, processor temperature, fan speeds, hard drive speeds and more.
