Web Standards is a set of recommendations published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), a group of over 500 member organizations from around the world. The organization was established in 1994 “to bring the network to its full potential”. Included in these recommendations are HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) 4.01, XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) and Cascading Style Sheets, Level 2 (CSS2) specifications. HTML is the author language used to create documents for the World Wide Web, and CSS is the language used in a file separated from html pages to specify the visual properties of the site, including layout. One of the basic recommendations of Web Standards is to separate the content of your web pages (in your HTML files) from the presentation data (CSS) in this way.

Once a webpage is written and published on the web, a validation service can be used to verify that the page in question has no syntax error and that it actually matches the string XHTML 1.0 or HTML 4.01 markup. Strict markup differs from transition marking in that string does not allow the use of older and now obsolete html elements. The reason many of these older tags are abandoned is because they have no semantic value and were used for presentation purposes only. As mentioned earlier, your site’s presentation data should be limited to a separate CSS file. The most important piece of information that is not validated is whether your document is semantically sound. For example, using tables to layout a page html does not give you an error at the time of validation, even if tables are for table data only, not layout. In this example, the validation service would not spit an error due to the fact that HTML tables are allowed when pages are written to a strict doc type, and the validator has no way of knowing that they have been used for non-tabular data, such as they have in this case.

This situation typically occurs when grouping sections of a web page for layout purposes. One of the biggest mistakes in html semantics is the use of html tables for site layout.

During the 1990s and still today, many so-called web developers choose to (mis) use HTML tables to define web page layout. Tables are intended for table information only, such as spreadsheets, and it is semantically inadequate to use them for layout.

Table-based layout schemas embed many and often nested (one into the other) tables, rows, and table data cells into HTML pages, typically inflating the pages to double the file size, creating slower site loading. HTML tables used in this way, often called table soup, will lower the ratio of meaningful data (which you want to have crawled and indexed by search engine spiders) to code on the page. The extra code in this case is what is known as presentation html, which contravenes the basic recommendation of strict web standards, since all presentation data belongs in the CSS file. Search engine spiders crawl a limited length of your page before leaving to index other links on your site, so you want the content of your HTML files to be accessible, with lean, standard requirements, valid markup, search engine spiders feeding just as well very valuable content as possible without unnecessary bloat of the presentation tag file, better suited for CSS.

In the 1990s, CSS layouts were difficult to implement due to the fact that the web browsers were much less standard than they are today. Today’s browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari and many others) are not perfect, some are better than others, but with sufficient knowledge and experience of CSS, any layout is done with tables and furthermore possible with CSS. While it is true that the learning curve for optimized CSS layouts is steeper than using tables, the benefits should go far beyond any concern about time standards compatible with learning standards.
